Virginia Beach – Skateboarders and policemen sometimes clash, but last week the two worlds briefly came together.

Instead of chasing the skaters from the Oceanfront, Officer Ryan Borman, 23, of Virginia Beach, wowed them with a few sick tricks.

While still wearing his uniform, Borman performed a 360-degree flip and flip – two technical moves that involve turning and flipping the board under his feet before landing again.

An audience member captured the moment in a video, which went viral with more than a million views on social media.

Borman made his moves with ease, even though he was wearing a thick vest and a heavy weapon on his belt.

“It really took a few tries,” Borman said in an interview. “The equipment is quite heavy.”

Borman knows the local skateboarding scene. He grew up in the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and graduated from First Colonial High School before joining the police department in 2018.

But he didn’t start to become a social media superstar on April 21. The video, posted Wednesday on TikTok, stems from a chance meeting between Borman and an old high school friend whom he met. he found himself skateboarding in an empty parking lot.

On a whim, Borman asked to borrow a board.

Sergey Whitney, a Chesapeake cinematographer, was there to hit the record.

“This is something you don’t see every day,” says Whitney, 27. I was shocked.”

As of Friday night, 1.5 million people had watched a video on TikTok. Hundreds of thousands of people have also watched similar videos on other social media platforms.

“That’s definitely crazy,” Borman said. “I didn’t expect that at all.”

Borman knows that the skateboarding community isn’t always sympathetic to law enforcement, but he hopes when people watch the video, it will help bridge the gap.

“We are everyday people just like them,” he said. I grew up doing exactly the same jobs they do now.”
