DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) — A horrific traffic accident early Tuesday morning left a man dead in the Deer Park area.

The eastbound SH-225 feeder at Underwood was blocked as deputies investigated the tragic accident.

According to Harris County sheriff’s representatives, the driver of the 18-wheeler was parked on the side of the SH-225 branch road from about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday with the truck’s hazard lights on.

The lorry driver is said to be awaiting delivery of the rebar he was towing and has gone back to the truck’s cabin to sleep. Rebar is a steel bar used as a tensioning device in reinforced concrete.

“It was parked by the curb with its lights and hazard lights on,” Sgt. Mother Dashana said.

According to officers, the truck driver was sleeping in his truck when he felt something hit his trailer around 3:30 a.m.

He got out and discovered a black four-door Infinity had run into the back of the trailer.

“[He] hit the rear, partly into the back of the truck, but mostly into the rebar, and basically the rebar went through the windshield and actually hit the driver, caused him life-threatening injuries,” Cheek said. “He was found here at the scene with no signs of life.”

Deputies said the truck driver immediately went to the back of his truck to check on the driver and found he appeared to be out of breath. He called 911 and has cooperated with investigators.

Investigators described the slain man as a Hispanic man in his 30s or 40s. They said he was wearing a work shirt and was likely driving to work. Or maybe he was on his way home when he crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler.

“There was no slip before impact, anything like that, suggesting he might have lost control or looked up at the last minute or tried to stop… He didn’t appear to have been driving in a lane. sugar,” said Cheek.

Investigators are not sure if the victim was able to fall asleep or receive medical attention in the time before the fatal crash.
