When welcoming a new pet into your home, it’s important that you choose one that fits your lifestyle. A dog trainer went viral when he shared the eight best dog breeds he believes are perfect for households with young children.
Adam from Southend Dog Training posted a video on TikTok, answering the question: “Dog recommendations for families with young children?” His answer has garnered more than 51,000 views, with dozens of animal lovers backing his choice in the comments.
In the clip posted on @southenddogtraining, Adam ranked the golden retriever at the top.
He describes them as follows: “Probably the friendliest, most sociable breed on the planet, great with children.
“Very soft, very gentle, but also active enough to take you away on holidays, beach trips, and more.”
“Other breeds that are well known to children are the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Border Terrier, greyhound, St Bernard, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Leonberger and a few others,” he said.
In the comments section, Adam explains that he forgot to mention boxers and Labradors, but will include them in the rankings.
In addition to recommending specific breeds, he adds: “Make sure you teach your kids that dogs don’t climb on frames and leave dogs alone while they’re eating and sleeping.
“Teach your child to respect the dog, teach your dog to respect your child.”
Dog owners have praised Adam’s choice, with many sharing their love and devotion to golden retrievers and Staffies.
“I’ve always had a Staff member since I was a little girl, they’re amazing at coaching right around kids,” one TikToker commented.
Although one person warned: “I love my golden, sweetest things, but they tend to be resource protective, so make sure you’re prepared for training.”
Other suggested breeds that Adam missed from the list.
“I have a golden retriever that is great with kids and is the cutest dog ever,” someone said.
“My parakeet is great with my kids and the younger kids it meets. How they are integrated and trained is what matters,” another wrote.
